Coming home, winding up my window, I hear a very nasty noise of something
snapping and metal wire being strained. Windows will not go up all the way.
Go online, judging by how easy it was to find discussions on the topic, this
does not seem to be unique. I take the door apart confirm the problem. The good
folks at the dealership don't seem to be able to commit to a specific ETA for
having the repair done so I come back home with spares.
Major thanks to VgRt6 at
VWvortex for this excellent article on Replacing the front door
window regulator clips and/or door lock module. The instructions were for a
Golf/Jetta but worked great on my Beetle.
The hardest part was Part II, step 24 - there just wasn't enough slack on
the line to do this easily by hand. I used 2 pieces of wire to tension the
cable as I was slipping it over the little pulley.
Total: $68 for the VW repair kit, $10 for a triple square tool, about 2-3
hours of work, most of it double checking each step.
